"We thoroughly
enjoyed our building experience with Richard and his
crews. In addition to Richard's
artistic sense, which brought forth much appreciated
suggestions, he clearly has a strong sense of organization....
estimates were
amazingly accurate and events tracked the timeline literally
within a matter of days! "
- Tom and Sharon Vos
This unusual owner-designed home was a real pleasure to build. The owners
have previously designed and built (or had built by others)
four custom homes in the upper Midwest. Owner Tom Vos, a talented
designer-engineer, developed all the architectural drawings
and created a 3-D model for use during construction. This sophisticated
design translates into a home of quiet serenity with views
out and in, as a central courtyard/atrium becomes a
focal point from almost
every room.
The owners worked daily on the jobsite (usually the first to arrive / last to
leave – weekends included!). Tom Vos worked many hours in our workshop
fabricating ornamental rafter tails - cutting, sanding, priming, painting, and
moving them to the jobsite where our carpenters installed them. Tom and his wife
Sharon then hand stacked 4000 +/- square feet of beautiful stone veneer which
accented the detached garage/apartment, the foundation of the house, and the
court yard atrium.
Thick shingles, stone veneers, cedar siding, and large fir columns give this
house a rich palette of finishes working harmoniously to create a home of enduring
beauty.
Interior finishes include top- of- the- line kitchen appliances, granite slab
counter tops, and bamboo floors. The kitchen island provides ample seating
for guests to visit and watch Tom & Sharon in the kitchen preparing delicious
meals.
This was truly a lovely and well thought-out home to build; it should be a pleasure
to live in. A great site, great clients, a great project all around.
